El Salvador has a long and sometimes troubled history. Its 12 year civil war from 1980-1992 began and ended due to significant internal and external forces always at play. The internal forces, including an entrenched oligarchy, ambitious politicians and the military all contributed the ingredients that led to war. External forces, most notably the United States, Soviet Union, Cuba and its central American neighbors and Mexico also contributed. Some combination of those participants also played roles in ending the war and led the way to the 1992 peace accords. This short-read book focuses on the elements of the accords and what has come since. El Salvador remains a work in progress, but the Salvadorans now have perhaps the first real chance to fully chart their own course.
